Cancellations could occur during inclement weather. Parents should listen to the radio, television, or check district and school websites for snow closing announcements. If the district or school where your child attends is closed, there will be no transportation for your child. If the school your child attends is open, it is possible that there could be a delay or cancellation in your child’s transportation. The BCIU’s website www.kywschools.com will post any transportation delay or closing.
Parents need to be aware of a delayed opening or closing of the district in which they live. Unfortunately, there are times when districts make different decisions regarding delayed openings and school closures. If your home district is either closed or delayed, we will not drive on your district roads considered dangerous due to the snow even if the school your child attends is open and operating on time. When there is disagreement among districts for delayed openings, we will try to rearrange routes to accommodate both schedules. It is not always possible to accomplish this. Sometimes, there could be an additional delay.
Some of our vehicles do not have the advantages of a heavy school bus and we travel on many side streets. Additionally, to complete a route it might be necessary to drive through districts that are closed and considered unsafe. Consequently, the BCIU may decide to have a delayed opening or be closed for transportation on days when your child lives in a district that is open and attends a school that is open. On those days, communication with your driver is critical.
Please be reminded that if schools close during the day, it is the responsibility of the parents to arrange for a responsible adult to be at the home when the student is returned.
