BCIU22's PA Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) Initiative-Coaching for Instructional Excellence!

For the 2011-12 School Year, The Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 is participating in The Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) initiative, a partnership of the Annenberg Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  The PIIC Initiative works to build teacher capacity, through instructional coaching, as a means of increasing student engagement and improving student achievement.  Carol Adams, an experienced literacy and coaching expert, has been hired as the BCIU22 PIIC Coach Mentor to support our Bucks County districts.  Presently, seven Bucks County schools have established PIIC teams consisting of an administrator, a coach, and two teachers.  These teams work to implement the Before/During/After Model of Consultancy as a way to refine classroom practices with the goal of creating a culture of coaching to advance school/district initiatives and goals.  These teams are also participating in advance study of literacy and coaching via the Penn Literacy Network courses offered through the PIIC grant.  The Bucks County Participating districts and schools are Quakertown: Quakertown High School, Milford Middle School, Strayer Middle School; Council Rock: Council Rock High School-North, Newtown Middle School; Bristol Township: Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School; Joint Operating—Quakertown, Palisades, Pennridge: Upper Bucks County Technical High School.

County-wide Support:  In addition to the intensive support given to the seven participating schools, monthly network coaching meetings are held for anyone whose job description includes supporting teachers to improve instruction.  The coaching network meet to explore ways to deepen the BDA (Before-During-After) consultancy cycle, to examine literacy practice as well as to look more closely at state initiatives such as common core standards.  If you are interested in attending these coaching network meetings please contact Carol Adams at caroladams@verizon.net or Dr. Eddie Frasca-Stuart at efstuart@bucksiu.org.
