SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICES

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

 

The primary goal of School Social Workers is to provide direct services for students within the schools, and linkages to organizations and agencies that can provide necessary community and home supports. Social workers provide supportive services to students to enable them to fully participate in and be successful in their educational programs. The social worker serves as a resource to school personnel, parents and students regarding problem-solving, behavior management techniques, crisis intervention, developing strategies to teach appropriate social, behavioral and adaptive skills, and to facilitate interagency collaboration.

 

School Social Workers have varied roles and functions depending on which district or program they serve.  

 

PROGRAM FEATURES:

 

  • Individual and group counseling for students experiencing emotional, social, educational, family and community difficulties that affect school success, i.e.  counseling for those experiencing common feelings or life situations, such as grief and loss, divorce or other trauma.

  • Social skills training such as anger management, peer mediation, conflict resolution, coping skills, communication skills, personal safety, and empowerment skills.

  • Home visits to assist in assessing students’ needs related to school. 

  • Liaison services among home, school and community resources in order to identify and secure needed services for a student.  i.e.  referral to the Medical Assistance Office to obtain free medical insurance, to a local Mental Health provider for ongoing counseling services, to Children and Youth for truancy issues, or facilitation of a specialized medical evaluation

  • Participation in IEP development and implementation of IEP goals and objectives related to Social Work services

  • Participation in Multidisciplinary Evaluations and Re-evaluations

  • Program supervision and management

  • Parent education

  • Affective curriculum development

  • Consultation with professional staff regarding programmatic needs of exceptional students

  • Consultation for developing intervention strategies to improve a student’s social, behavioral and adaptive skills

  • Interagency coordination
