Classroom Instructional Approaches

Many students in the classroom benefit from direct instruction for reading and math. Programs used may include (but are not limited to) Reading Mastery, Edmark and Edmark Time. Curriculum and programs also used include TouchMath, Wilson Fundations and SRA Real Math.

 

Language Enriched Classroom

Speech development and social pragmatic language is threaded throughout everyactivity and lesson. Students are given experience to practice how to applywhat they are learning (i.e. making a phone call to their home, relaying amessage to another classroom).

 

Positive Behavior
Students “check in” hourly on their progress with explicitly taught pro-socialskills. Students choose rewards from a high interest menu of items. Highexpectations yield great results!

Technology Integration
An interactive whiteboard helps to keep all students engaged during classroomactivities. A morning meeting routine reinforces turn taking and helps thestudents learn to wait. During this routine, students engage with one anotherand practice appropriate pragmatic language skills, or social language. I useUnited Streaming videos to reinforce grade level curricular themes. My iTuneslibrary houses various songs to bring out responses in all of thestudents. I have iPod nanos and iPod touches loaded with music, videos andapps.
